Facebook has become an all encompassing, constantly evolving bookmark of our social identity.
Facebook is the all seeing eye. Facebook is at every party, invites you to join your friends at your next social gathering, documents your every vacation and tracks every conversation you have.
The almighty News Feed tells us where our friends went on vacation, what event they are attending, their opinions on everything from politics to their boss’ body odour, and even who they are dating.
When we first meet someone it is common to add them on Facebook long before you ever ask for their contact number or email. When you are looking for a job, chances are the recruiter will view your Facebook profile and evaluate you before even glancing at the resume. Facebook has effectively become a rich online representation of our identity and personality.
From the perspective of recording human history, I find it fascinating that one hundred years down the line we will be able to look back and look at every conversation, map out our social habits and quantify our opinions on everything from the election of the first black president to Chris Brown and Rihanna.
One thing I find fascinating is how Facebook has evolved from merely a communications platform into a tool that attempts to map out our online and offline lives.
When the News Feed was initially integrated into Facebook many people were outraged at the apparent invasion of privacy and threatened to cancel their Facebook accounts.
Ironically, the News Feed was the sole reason Facebook has trumped the hundreds of social networks available – even the top dog MySpace. Facebook became more than just an online social network, it became the keystone of our social lives and became the gatekeeper to gossip, news and our friends.
Currently Facebook is hard at work at inciting yet another revolution. This time it is one that will meld both our online and offline activity and identities. With the redesign of the Wall and Facebook Connect, Facebook is looking to help you share every video you watch, every article you read and every website you visit with your friends through the News Feed.
You will see the new Wall it is no longer a conversation between you and a friend. It is alive with content, media and actions from all across the web.
Every post, status update and message is open to comment, interactive and alive.
The News Feed is begging for your input, to engage, comment and now we can even ‘Like’ items of interest.
Your Facebook account is becoming your business card, your communications hub and aggregator of your thoughts.
What message are you sending out?
