I just wrote a post on this myself; two actually. One in which I blog about SM in business, and feel the same way as you: there must be action behind all the talk or it doesn't mean anything. The second was actually about my crush on Twitter. I have fallen in love with social media, but because of all the great people (the real life ones) I get to meet and work with as a result. So I've definitely fallen into the love trap, but hopefully in a balanced way. I sure hope my friends would intervene if I got like one of the people in the cartoon--which is hilarious, by the way.

I think you might just be right on that one Aidan, however the Facebook and Friendfeed boys have been chatting for a while and I wouldn't be surprised if they dipped their toes in.

If anything, it is display of why Facebook brought in Friendfeed and where they plan to go in the future in terms of native integration.

Personally I think it makes Facebook far more attractive as a platform and with the Facebook 3.0 iPhone App coming out with the ability to post to Pages, it could really make the Facebook Page the hub of the social media presence.

Hey Dan!

Hate to be the nitpicky type, though I feel this is important enough to mention: according to Facebook's blog post about the Facebook/Twitter integration, the feature has been in the works since earlier this summer, being developed by a Facebook-hired engineering intern.

That said, this is indeed a great way for Facebook to steer brand attention back toward itself as the publishing platform of choice, and there's sure to be some killer additions to its services from the Friendfeed team.

I am going to be very interested to see how users react to the new search features that should be rolling out before the end of the year.

I think what they are trying to do is become more pervasive in the online lives of their customers.

Once upon a time Altavista used to be one of the leaders in search, however that is all they were. What Google has succeeded in doing is increasing their share of the attention and dependency of the users through complimentary services.

I see Facebook as trying to become more than just a social network with initiatives such as Facebook Connect, search and a big push from corporate and application sides.

Facebook is becoming more than just a social network, it is becoming a part of our online identity. Once it is a part of our identity it will very hard for us to give it up.

Good luck to Facebook!

I think they are almost there but I am sure there needs to be some kind of fine tuning if you aren't going to freak out the users.

Can't say this comes as a surprise. They don't create anything so how else are they gonna make money.

I reckon this issue will be the one that ends Facebook's domination of Social Networking (#1) when something new steps in with a more transparent, explicit and acceptable value proposition.

Amen.

Social media is just a tool.
That is it.

A way to be nice to your many customers, a way to make yourself more approachable, a way to get insta-feedback on a major change to your website or product offering. At the end of the day picking up the phone, emailing, sitting down for lunches are still the best way to really connect to potential customers, current customers, and business partners.
